Dr. Maeva Njonkoue, on her way to become psychiatrist

Dr. Maeva Njonkoue is from Cameroon and deeply devoted to break the taboos around mental health among Afro-descendants and contribute to raise the number of Cameroonian medical staff in psychiatry. According to the World Health Organization, in 2020 there were only 12 psychiatrists, 300 psychologists and 150 mental health nurses in Cameroon for around 30 million people.

She’s currently doing a specialization in psychiatry at a Swiss hospital. One of her biggest challenges is meeting the demand of a 50-hour-per-week shift while having side activities. To overcome this, she relies on planning. She plans her weeks and months to maintain balance. It’s an exciting branch, and for someone who gets bored easily, like her, it was important to work in such dynamic sector.

Let’s celebrate her legacy, and let’s continue to work towards creating a more inclusive and diverse STEM community.
